Preschool-G Each of the four books in the new Plants Close-Up series offers an extremely basic introduction to plant parts and functions. What Are Bulbs and Roots? includes sturdy definitions, explanations, and examples of bulbs, roots and their offshoots, and rhizomes. All the books' pages are laid out similarly, with one large photo or simple diagram and a short paragraph of text on each page. While this layout is exceptionally clear, especially for the diagrams, it does become a bit monotonous. The final page of each title features notes for adults about one or two very simple activities (for example, growing a plant from a root such as a potato) or experiments (such as growing seeds with water, sunlight, or both) related to the book's topic.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
