Chief of Police Jonah Westfall, of Redford, Colorado, battles alcohol and a rash of crimes. Drugs and mutilated animals are showing the small town's growing pains. The animal mutilations are graphic, and mental illness is presented strikingly. Kirsten Potter brings Jonah vividly to life, portraying him with attentive details. Also, she smoothly provides differentiated voices for the secondary characters--Tia Manning, Jonah's childhood love; fun-loving young Piper; and taciturn Sarge.
