Many died; the survivors lived on melted snow and human flesh until two of them undertook a perilous seven-day hike to safety. The story became Piers Paul Read's adventure classic, ALIVE. Now, over thirty years later, Parrado, one of the hikers, gives a first-hand account of the two-and-a-half-month ordeal. Arthur Morey does a capable job reading what is essentially a narrative. He brings out the grief Parrado felt at the loss of his mother and sister, the camaraderie and some dissension among the survivors, and the beauty of the mountains that imprisoned them. J.B.G.
