School Library Journal
November 1, 2012
Gr 1-3-Similar in scope to "Our Amazing States" (Rosen/PowerKids Pr), each title is a veritable Chamber of Commerce. In a few short paragraphs per spread, the highlights of each state (geographical location, population, primary industries, landmarks, and early history) are described. A "Hometown Heroes" section focuses on famous people. A mix of modern-day and historical figures connects the past to the present. For example, Francis Scott Key and Michael Phelps are the notables from Maryland. A "Tour Book" spread suggests fun places to visit. A "Fast Facts" section includes date of statehood and other information. Clear color photos and reproductions flanked by stars-and-stripes borders are eye-catching. Simple, straightforward tables of contents and indexes are ideal for students just learning research skills. The content is well organized and the uncluttered layout and ample white space make the large-font text pop.

The Horn Book

These state overviews provide general information on important cities, state history, geography, natural resources, industry, and famous residents, while final sections summarize facts such as population, motto, state flag, etc. Generic spreads include "Did You Know?" sidebars and lackluster photographs. Overall the volumes are bland but may be useful for school reports. Timeline. Glos., ind.(Copyright 2013 by The Horn Book, Incorporated, Boston. All rights reserved.)

Gr 2-5-An informative look at the history, geography, and culture of the 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Each book examines an individual state's population, industry, and place in American history using simple sentence structure and beautiful, full-page images. Examples of the favorite pastimes and famous landmarks of the state are provided. A glossary, a time line, an index, and a state fact page are included. A QR code links to updated information. The series does a wonderful job of portraying each state in a positive light, highlighting its important role in America's past and present. VERDICT This appealing series will make children proud of their home state.
